Mizen Automation Celebrates Major Win at the 2025 Business South Awards

Mizen Automation is proud to share its recent success at the Business South Awards, where the company received the Excellence in Exporting award and was also named a finalist in the Excellence in Sustainability category. These acknowledgements reflect Mizen’s focus on growing its global presence while staying committed to responsible and environmentally conscious practices. Both areas have played a big part in shaping the company’s journey from South Dunedin to international markets.

Excellence in Exporting: Building a Global Presence from South Dunedin

Winning the Excellence in Exporting award recognises Mizen Automation’s international growth and its reputation as a trusted supplier of industrial automation hardware in  more than 15 countries.

Working from its base in South Dunedin, Mizen supplies and supports a wide range of automation components, including PLCs, HMIs, drives, motors and sensors. These products are used by customers in sectors such as:

  • Food and beverage
  • Power generation
  • Medical and pharmaceutical
  • Automotive
  • Oil and gas
  • Mining
  • Pulp and paper
  • General manufacturing

Managing Director Mark Hurley credits the company’s growth to its customer-first approach and its ability to deliver reliable solutions in demanding industrial environments.

“Whether we are helping maintenance teams who need to keep downtime to a minimum or buyers searching for cost effective replacements and hard to find parts, Mizen Automation is committed to supporting customers with dependable solutions that meet their operational needs,” says Mark.

Mizen has exported thousands of components across Australia, Asia, Europe and the Americas. The team has also navigated global supply chain challenges by building a strong and diverse sourcing network, investing in advanced repair and refurbishment capabilities, and using AI tools to connect worldwide demand with available stock.

This work has supported the local economy as well.

“Our export growth has helped create jobs in Dunedin, strengthened relationships with global suppliers, and saved customers millions through refurbished and current line alternatives. We’re proud to help engineers and technicians worldwide keep their operations moving,” says Mark.

Sustainability Finalist: Extending the Life of Industrial Components

Mizen Automation was also named a finalist in the Excellence in Sustainability category, reflecting the company’s long-standing commitment to reducing waste in the industrial sector.

A core part of Mizen’s business model focuses on extending the lifespan of automation components. By repairing, reusing and recycling hardware, valuable parts stay in circulation rather than ending up in landfill.

Some of the company’s main sustainability initiatives include:

  • Repairing, reusing and recycling components to reduce waste
  • Supporting clients who rely on obsolete or end of life automation hardware and helping them avoid unnecessary upgrades
  • Operating a growing buy back programme that recovers surplus components for refurbishment
  • Offering both new and refurbished products, each supplied with a warranty
  • Maintaining strong performance standards through efficient global sourcing and fast delivery

Mark notes that sustainability is built into how the company operates every day.

“Through efficient global sourcing and fast, reliable shipping, Mizen ensures that choosing sustainable options does not mean compromising on uptime.”

This approach helps organisations in New Zealand, Australia and overseas reduce waste, manage costs and strengthen their operational resilience while supporting a circular economy model.

A Dual Achievement that Reflects Mizen’s Direction

Recognition in both exporting and sustainability highlights the combination of strengths that guide Mizen Automation: global reach, technical capability and a commitment to responsible industry practices.

From Dunedin to the world, Mizen will continue to support engineering teams across a wide range of industries and look for smarter, more sustainable ways to keep essential operations running.
